The zone type does not interfere with the functions of the tavern except for very specific examples.A tavern added to a dungeon will be a jolly, lively drinking spot at a working dungeon with prisoners and all. The location does not override the function of the zone. A tavern is a location which is added to zones, of course. To ensure happy thoughts from dining, be certain that they're using chairs in a dining hall. Dwarves eating outside of a dining hall zone will receive no thoughts regarding their dining setting. So while you theoretically do not need a chair for every dining dwarf to get them into the dining room, you do need a chair for every dining dwarf to avoid the unhappy thought about lacking chairs. It appears that a dwarf will go to an occupied chair, eat on top of the dwarf already there, and then complain about a lack of chairs. They do, however, get an unhappy thought for a 'lack of tables' if there is none adjacent to their chair. Yeah, they don't bother finding tables, it's the chair they're after. edit: Owned dining halls will be used with priority by their owner. They choose the closest chair and eat there. Dwarves are not drawn to eat meals at an dining hall.I added some general knowledge too, in case you're new to the game. I discovered some peculiarities that I think you might not expect, regarding dining halls and taverns.

I've been fact checking and confirming science for future videos (it's been a wonderfully lengthy process), and I had to do quite a bit on zones and locations since they have seen some changes. Kitfox Discord #modding-discussion channelīronzemurder and Oilfurnace (illustrated)
